Griha pravesh & housewarming
Griha pravesh, paal kaachal and welcome-home parties.
Guests press and hold the stove until the milk in a brass pot boils over, a wish that the home always has plenty. Rice-flour kolam, turmeric and terracotta: the new address, the morning rituals, things to know and blessing tiles for the door.
Guests slide a key into the lock, turn it, and the front door swings open onto warm light. A night-blue tower with windows lighting up, a room-by-room tour, the evening plan, a fridge door guests stick notes on and house rules.
Guests tap a coconut three times at the doorstep until it cracks open, and the carved doors swing apart. Maroon, marigold and mango-leaf torans: the puja vidhi, prasad and lunch, the elders' blessings and a row of diyas guests light with a wish.
